Haydn Green, 21, of Gainsborough, died after suffering a suspected asthma attack on 10th June.

Haydn had been a player with Marshalls of Gainsborough for around seven years after initially joining them as a junior player when he was 14.

He had risen steadily through the ranks to become one of the club’s main players, this season being named captain of the club’s midweek side.

He was also a regular member of their Saturday afternoon Bassetlaw League team and was the leading run scorer so far this season.

“It still has sunk in that he’s gone, most of us at the club are still so shocked at how sudden it was, we can’t believe it,” said Marshalls secretary Martyn Snell.

“When I phoned round to people to give them terrible news, some thought it was almost a wind-up.”

“We knew he had asthma but there had not been the slightest sign of anything being wrong.”

“I’d only seen him playing football the day before and we knew he had the odd asthmatic moment but obviously this one was more complicated.”

“Haydn was a lovely man, a real character and the life and soul of the party.”

“He had the most ridiculous dress sense, he used to wear lime green trousers and flip flops.”

“That was just typical of him, really flamboyant and full of energy.”

“We’re all around the same age at the club so we’ve all grown up playing cricket together and it’s as much a social thing and the time we have as mates as anything else.”

“We’ve not just lost a team-mate, we’ve lost a great friend.”

“He gave plenty back to the club too.”

“He used to help with the coaching of our futures at Marshalls and he was definitely part of the long-term future for the club.”

“He captained the midweek team and he would almost certainly have gone on to captain the first-team one day too.”

The club are planning several fund-raising events for his family and are planning to re-name the pavilion at their Middlefield Lane ground in his memory.

His funeral will take place at Gainsborough Parish Church on Wednesday, 25th June at 12noon and Scunthorpe Crematorium at 1.20pm.

Everyone is then invited to celebrate his life at the Blues Club in Gainsborough.

In reflecting Haydn’s character, mourners are asked not to wear any black.
