Gainsborough: Creepy summer reading challenge for kids

Kids aged between four and 12 have six weeks to complete the free Summer Reading Challenge – with fantastic prizes on offer for those who reach the target.

Every child who reads six books gets a special certificate marking their achievement and will be entered into a prize draw to win a Kindle e-ink, iPod Nano or £50 book voucher.

Parents who support their child through the challenge will also be entered into a draw to win a Kobo.

“The Summer Reading Challenge is a lot of fun for both children and their parents or carers,” said Coun Nick Worth, executive member of libraries at Lincolnshire County Council.

“It helps keep kids entertained and maintains their literacy skills during the school break, and it gives adults a great opportunity to share time with their young ones through storytelling.”

Set up by The Reading Agency, this year’s Summer Reading Challenge is based on Creepy House – a spine-tingling adventure that provides the backdrop for children’s progress towards their six-book goal.

Jonathan Platt, the council’s head of libraries and heritage, said: “By reading the books, children work their way around the Creepy House and meet some of its hair-raising residents. There are also secrets to unlock, games to play, and trading cards to collect – all through the reading challenge’s website www.creepy-house.org.uk. It’ll be a scream.”

The children’s reading challenge also coincides with one for adults.

The Six Book Challenge aims to help the one in six men and women who struggles to read.

Those taking part will be entered into a prize draw to win a Kindle e-Ink, portable DVD player or £50 book voucher.

Anyone taking part in the two challenges can read whatever they like as long as the books are borrowed from the library service.

All abilities are catered for, with audio books and alternative formats available for those with visual impairments.
