Gainsborough: Fame Academy youngsters show off their best moves in Dance Fever

The event was a week-long summer school organised by local group Fame Academy and featured more than 60 young performers aged 10 to 13 years-old.

Everyone involved received training and tuition for some experienced choreographers who have worked on productions like the world-famous Swan Lake in the past.

“There used to be a Dance Academy project in the town but the people running that stopped because they moved away, so we decided to take it on,” said Matthew Hewitt, one of the organisers.

“We had more than 60 children from 13 different schools taking part and they loved it.”

“They were there from 9am to 3.30pm each day and they had to work hard because this was a pure dance school event and they learned some 20 different routines to be part of.”

“But they really rose to the challenge and they were all excited to be there every day.”

“At the end of the week, they performed the hour-long show they had set and rehearsed at the Academy and the parents couldn’t believe how much they had achieved and produced in such a short space of time.”

The current Fame Academy project in Gainsborough started last September and they initially had 18 students coming to their classes on Saturday mornings.

But interest in the scheme has quickly grown and they now have 62 people aged five to 18 currently registered as being part of the project.

“We decided to do the week-long summer school as some people cannot make it on Saturday mornings and it’s proved to be a great idea,” continued Matthew.

“Dance Fever was only for dancing but we are doing another one shortly called the Snow White Summer School which will be about putting on a production of Snow White and that will encompass dancing, singing and acting.”

“We will also definitely look at doing another Dance Fever school next summer because the response we have had has been tremendous.”
