Gainsborough: Fine Arts Society learn about embroidery techniques

After a two month break the new season has started for the Gainsborough and District Decorative and Fine Arts Society.

Members and visitors met for the September meeting at the Trinity Arts Centre to enjoy the very popular lecture on the many and varied techniques of embroidery.

The lecture was delivered by the eminent Dr Susan Kay-Williams, chief executive of the Royal School of Needlework based at Hampton Court Palace.

She has travelled extensively and lectured all over the world to explain how the RSN works on traditional embroidery techniques that can be used in very innovative and contemporary ways and how they undertake the creation of new and carefully researched commissions.

The RSN also run courses for all levels on conservation, restoration and the repair of antique embroideries.

The next meeting of the Society is on Thursday 2nd October.

Renowned furniture expert Janusz Karczewski-Slowiskowski will speak on ‘In Cupboards and Drawers.’

The meeting will start at 1.45pm at the Trinity Arts Centre in Gainsborough.

The Gainsborough and District Decorative and Fine Arts Society was founded in 1978 and has a membership of just over 200.

The Society exists to promote interest in and knowledge of all matters both current and historic relating to decorative and fine arts including textiles.
