Gainsborough: ‘Legless’ knife-wielding man caused Christmas Day disturbance

Police officers were called to Clinton Terrace in Gainsborough after reports of an incident breaking out in the street.

Jonathan Straw, prosecuting in the case, said residents heard a man threatening to kill people followed by a female voice screaming ‘Chris. Give up’.

Christopher Campbell was seen in the road with his partner.

Mr Straw said “They gave the impression that they were in drink. They started having a go at each other.”

“The domestic verbal dispute continued. Throughout it this defendant had with him a large wooden-handled knife. He didn’t brandish it or wave that knife around. No-one was harmed.”

Mr Straw said that Campbell had thrown the knife away by the time police arrived at the scene.

He later told police officers he had the weapon to harm himself.

Campbell,30, who is currently of Louisburg Road, Hemswell Cliff, admitted possession of a knife as a result of the incident on 25th December last year.

Campbell was ordered to complete a 12 month community order with 175 hours of unpaid work.

David Eager, defending, said his client had already suffered punishment as he had spent a number of days in custody on remand before being granted bail.

“He has a history of self harming. It is his hope that he can now return to the matrimonial home.”

Recorder Gareth Evans QC told him: “You were legless. Both of you were in the street arguing.

“You had a knife in your hand but you didn’t use it. No harm was caused to any person.

“I suppose anybody in the street who saw that would have thought those two are so drunk nothing is going to happen.”
