Mary Cook, the Honorary Poppy Appeal Organiser for Gainsborough and District said: “It gives me great pleasure to announce that this year’s appeal has raised the record sum of £22,667 and this will help the Legion in its vital benevolent work for members of the Armed Forces community.”

For the past 93 years The Royal British Legion has been giving practical help and emotional support to brave veterans who fought for our country.

As a nation we relied on their selfless bravery and now they are relying on us and we must not let them down.

While never forgetting older veterans, the Legion’s welfare services are increasingly focused on wounded personnel who returned from recent operational theatres.

We have all seen the images; the convoys carrying those who paid the ultimate sacrifice, the grief of the families, the courage of the injured, the young men and women – and we all say: “these are the people we must help and be there for”.

The Royal British Legion is there for them at life’s critical events, poor health or living with a long-term injury, bereavement, at times of financial hardship and when they need care in old age.

Nearly a quarter of those who are helped now are below the age of 44 and another 25 per cent are between the age of 44 and 68.

Shoulder to shoulder with all who Serve, the Legion has never been more active in its dual role of caring and campaigning for them and their families.

Mrs Cook added: “My sincere thanks go to all those who helped with this year’s Appeal and to all those who donated.”

“On behalf of those who will benefit from such generosity, thank you sincerely.”
