Gainsborough: Prince’s Trust team raises funds for nursery

Youngsters taking part in a Prince’s Trust course, run by Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue, have been raising funds for a charity-run nursery in Gainsborough.

Week five of the 12-week personal development course has seen the team packing bags, waxing their legs and baking cakes to raise cash to spruce up the outdoor play area at YMCA Beginnings Day Care.

And so far they have raised more than £300 for paint and materials.

Lorraine Espin-Hempsall, team leader of the Prince’s Trust programme in Gainsborough, said: “The programme is not just about what we teach the young people in terms of employability, it’s also about helping them to develop coping mechanisms to manage outside factors which might be affecting them getting a job.”

“We work with young people who have children and need to find child care, young people with mental health issues and people who are moving home in difficult circumstances sometimes.”

“The young people chose this project themselves and have really gotten stuck in, raising money to support the nursery.”

“They’re hoping to help create a vegetable patch, put up some new fencing and plant some fruit trees in the nursery garden.”

“For a lot of the young people on the course this is the first time they have done anything like this and the way they are working together as a team and supporting each other is great to see.”
