Games pioneer is to be made an MBE

An award winning video games pioneer from Nottingham is to be made an MBE later this year.

Debbie Bestwick, from Papplewick, was recognized for her services to the computer games industry after a career which started in Nottingham almost 30 years ago.

Ms Bestwick is the founder and current owner of label Team17, who are based in Mansfield and Wakefield, and are responsible for creating more than 70 games over the past 25 years, including titles such as The Escapists and the soon to be released Yooka-Laylee.

Since their formation in 1990, Debbie has transformed Team 17 into a well renowned indie publisher, winning previous accolades such as Best Business Development, Publisher of the Year and Best British Game awards at Gamescom in 2015. She was also named the 2015 Person of the Year at the MCV Awards and Businesswoman of the Year at the Women in Games Awards the same year.

Ms Bestwick was delighted to receive the Queen’s honour and heaped praise on her colleagues at Team 17 for their hard efforts over the years.

She said: “I’m flattered and honoured to receive an MBE. I am incredibly lucky and thankful to be able to work with such a talented team and partners and contribute in the success of the British Game Industry.

“In the last 3 decades I’ve always worked hard and try to do my best to help nourish and bring through the next generation. This MBE only reinforces my passion for an industry I’ve grown up in.”

One of Team 17’s most distinguished gaming titles, Worms, was created back in 1994. Since its formation, it has sold over 65+ million units and is renowned as a video game classic.

Ms Bestwick began her career in retail.
