A teenager had to be rescued by firefighters after she became stranded on an island in a lagoon at Steetley Colliery.

Fire crews from Matlock, Staveley and Chesterfield attended the scene just before 9pm last night (Tuesday).

A spokesman for Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “They found the 14-year-old girl marooned on an island about 150 metres from the edge of the water.”

“She was unable to swim to safety.”

Crews used an inflatable float to rescue the girl.

They left the scene at 10pm.
