Coun Reg Howard, who sadly passed away in April, raised £1,349.40 during his term of office as Chairman of South Kesteven District Council in 2014/15 for his chosen charity, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).

In his honour, current Chairman Coun Ray Wootten, accompanied by portfolio holder for arts, leisure and culture Coun Linda Wootten handed over a cheque to coxswain Ray Chapman, at South Kesteven’s nearest lifeboat station in Skegness on Sunday.

Coun Ray Wootten said: “Coun Howard meant a great deal to us all at both the District Council and Market Deeping Town Council where he served as Mayor 13 times.

“Raising money for the RNLI was extremely important to him as he was a young reservist in the Royal Navy from August 1939 to April 1946, stationed in the South Atlantic, Sierra Leone and South East Asia.

“During those years he saw the determination, dedication and service required to fulfil a duty to their country which filled him with great pride. He fully sympathised with the efforts and challenges our armed forces face today.

“Because of his naval background he also paid tribute to those courageous men and women who saved lives, particularly those who braved treacherous conditions to rescue those at sea. I am sure he would be comforted to know that his charity efforts will go towards helping our local lifeboat station at Skegness.”
