Insurers Direct Line for Business say giveaway indicators include:
Excessive fortification inside and out;
Blacked out windows;
A pungent smell;
Humidity, condensation on windows, peeling wallpaper.
They also say landlords should watch for sudden fluctuations in electricity bills and evidence of wiring being tampered with.

Hide AdNottinghamshire has one of the highest rates of cannabis plant cultivation in the country according to a new survey of police seizures.
Figures show more than 450,00 plants were seized across the UK in 2013-14.
With 59,002, the most seizures were made by the Metropolitan police in London, but this only equates to 2,936 plants per million properties.
By that measure, Nottinghamshire Police had the fifth highest rate in the country with 5,894 plants seized per million properties.

Hide AdNeighbouring South Yorkshire was also in the top five with a figure of 6,638, while Wiltshire topped the list at 9,613 plants seized.
The survey was carried out by i Direct Line for Business, which warned landlords to be wary of their properties being used for cannabis farms.
Direct Line’s Jane Gauschi said: “The consequences can be financially catastrophic.
“Landlords could face loss of rent and the stress of the legal wrangling during periods of repair or eviction.”
Overall, seizures fell ten per cent between 2013 and 2014, but a third of police forces saw an average 40 per cent increase in the same period.
