Group and its '˜twinning' ways

The group overseeing a link between Sleaford and towns in France and Germany is seeking to raise the profile of its work.

Founded in 1999, the Sleaford and District Twinning Association works to – in its own words – promote friendship and understanding between Sleaford and its twin towns of Fredersdorf-Vogelsdorf, in Germany, and Marquette-Les-Lille, in France.

A spokesman said: “The association organises annual visits to both towns and also hosts a reciprocal visit to Sleaford.

“Anyone who lives in our community, of any age, is welcome to join us on a visit to either, or both of our twin towns.

“We also actively seek hosts for our guests when they visit us.

“You don’t have to speak the language either, but it is a fun way to learn.

“We have a range of language ability amongst our members which makes such visits so enjoyable.”

A typical visit, the spokesman continued, will usually include an organised excursion, be it to the French battlefields or the sights in and around Berlin.

“There is always an evening function for all with entertainment, a meal and lots of local refreshments to sample,” they added. “There will also be the chance to spend a day doing what you want, alone or with your hosts.”

The group’s activities are not limited to the trips, though; for example, it provides schools in the area with a French or German experience in the form of a continental breakfast to help with their language activities. It also holds regular social activities allowing members to get together several times a year.

“We are always seeking new, active members to keep the association going strong,” the spokesman added.

The next twinning trip is to Fredersdorf-Vogelsdorf on Thursday-Sunday, August 25-28. The cost is £130 for adults and £70 for children

The price covers return coach or minibus travel from Sleaford to an appropriate airport (either Luton or Stansted) and flights to and from Berlin. Accommodation is with local families.

The weekend will include outings shared with visitors from Marquette-lez-Lille, social activities and time to get to know hosts and perhaps explore Berlin.

A trip to Marquette-Les-Lille is planned for Thursday-Sunday, October 20-23.
