This month sees my four-year anniversary working for Macmillan.

Did I ever think back then that I would be working for a charity?

Simply put, the answer was no, but now I can’t think of a role that I’d rather be waking up to every day.

Most of us sadly know someone affected by cancer and I’m no different.

I know how important the support Macmillan provides is.

Many of the fundraising team at Macmillan talk about a ‘Macmillan moment’, a time when reality hits home and it becomes abundantly clear why we work so hard. My ‘Macmillan moment’ continues to inspire me to this day and I wanted to share this with you all.

One of my favourite things about the job is working with schools.

This particular day I had travelled to a primary school near Skegness to deliver an assembly after generous pupils had raised money for us, such a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness at a young age.

The assembly went well and as I was about to leave, I heard someone shouting followed by footsteps running after me.

I was greeted by a girl no older than six, who held out a clenched fist and quickly revealed 20p, which she told me was to help the ‘poorly people’. In that moment, words escaped me.

I had inspired that young girl to donate and that 20p made my day, week and month.

People care so much about this charity, it never fails to amaze me.

Over the coming months, I will be sharing with you some great local stories, talking about the amazing people supporting Macmillan by fundraising and volunteering, and showcasing some of the work we are involved with to improve cancer care.

If you’re reading this and thinking you’d like to get involved and support Macmillan, then please get in touch.
