Harpswell death crash careless driving trial

The driver claimed to be ‘profoundly sorry’.

Among those killed in crash in September 2010 was 74-year-old Corringham man Don Johnson.

Lindsay Smith, from The Cloisters in Grimsby, pleaded guilty to two charges of causing death by careless driving following a collision on the A 631 at Harpswell Hill, near Gainsborough on 25th September 2010.

Speaking at Lincoln Crown Court on Wednesday 7th December, the 20-year-old’s barrister John Lloyd-Jones told the hearing that Smith admitted that she momentarily lost her concentration.

He said that this then caused her Vauxhall Corsa to cross the centre white line and drive into the path of an oncoming vehicle carrying two pensioners.

In requesting a probation report he said: “This is a young lady who is a carer and whose whole life is dedicated to caring for others. She remembers nothing of the collision but accepts she momentarily lost her concentration.”

Mr Lloyd-Jones added: “She is profoundly sorry and will be for the rest of her life.”

Don Johnson, 74, of Mill Mere Road, Corringham near Gainsborough , who was driving the other car, and his passenger Jean Matthews, 60, who lived in Stamford Street, Grantham, were both killed in the crash.

Judge Sean Morris adjourned sentence for the preparation of a probation report and Smith was granted bail.
