Help celebrate the Queen's 90th birthday in Skegness

A local councillor was so disappointed about the lack of events in Skegness for the community to celebrate the Queen's 90th birthday that she has put out a rallying call to get something sorted.

Coun Maggie Gray says she was overwhelmed by the response when she suggested on Facebook that a Picnic in the Park might be a good idea.

She said: “As ELDC and the Town Council have no resources, ie money, to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday will anyone join me in arranging something for the town? Picnic in the Park? ie Tower Gardens?”

Within minutes more than 30 people had responded. Ann Tuck said: “That is a shame they have no money for anything as special as this.”

Wendy Smith said: “Shame on ELDC, tut tut. This great lady is our Queen. Where is your pride?”

A spokesman for ELDC said: “East Lindsey has over 160 towns and parishes. Coun Gray would be right to say the District Council doesn’t have the resources to deliver events in all of these communities. It tends to be Town and Parish Councils and local groups that lead on this type of community event.”

As it is too late to organise anything for the Queen’s real birthday on Thursday, Coun Gray hopes something can be sorted for around Her Majesty’s official birthday in June.

If you would like to help, the first meeting for the Queen’s 90th Celebration is at the Seaview pub on North Parade on Tuesday, April 26, at 7.30pm.
