High fryers!

A RETFORD fish and chip shop is celebrating after becoming the first in the county to achieve a national award for quality.

JM’s on West Street were awarded this week with the National Federation for Fish Fryers Quality Award presented by Bassetlaw MP John Mann.

Owner John Massey said he was thrilled with the achievement.

“We are over the moon. I’ve been wanting to apply for the past five years. My son took the phone call to say there was an assessor coming out to see us,” he said.

“I panicked but fortunately we did well. It’s nice to find out you’re doing things right.”

“You get assessed on management, customer service as well as the quality of your fish and chips.”

After 30 years as an engineering, John decided to settle down with his own fish and chip shop and opened JM’s on 4th July 2002.

He added: “I always wanted a chip shop. It was my childhood ambition.”
