High Sheriffs’ and Humberside Police Tribune trust helps young musicians

The High Sheriff of the East Riding of Yorkshire Mrs Gail Mettyear and Hugh Bethell, Chairman of the Tribune Trustee, will today present a cheque for £1,400 to Ian Conyers, President of The Rotary Club of Humberside. The money will be used to provide a musical bursary to a young talented musician.

The Rotary Club of Humberside and the Hull Music Service formed a partnership with the objective of awarding bursaries to pupils from Hull Schools who have demonstrated significant musical potential and whose further development requires some financial support.

Pupils are incentivised by the recognition given to their success in music, develop increased self-esteem and begin to raise their aspirations across the whole curriculum and their wider lives. Each bursary has a value of £200 per year and runs for between five and seven years.

Since the scheme was launched in 2013 twelve bursaries have been awarded. This ambitious scheme requires a considerable amount of money which has been raised through concerts and sponsorship from local businesses, the community and other charitable organisations. The Rotary Club of Humberside now aim to raise sufficient funds to award a further five bursaries in each of the next school years. The Tribune Trust are delighted to have been able to provide the funding for one of these bursaries.

Mr Conyers said: “With the generosity and support of the High Sheriff’s and Humberside Police Tribue trust along with a number of other charitable trusts, various local businesses and our own fund raising efforts we are delighted to be able to help a number of talented Hull youngsters to progress their music studies. We strongly believe that this will encourage them to fulfil their potential.”

Mr Cheeseman Trust said: “Young people need opportunities to achieve their full potential and avoid drifting into problem behaviour. Some young people thrive on academic and sporting success while others discover they have a talent for music. Without the financial support offered by this musical bursary some of that talent might be lost. That is why the Trustees were unanimous in agreeing to make a grant to fund a bursary. They look forward to learning about the progress the young person who receives this bursary makes over the coming years.”
