The alert was raised after the mystery object was discovered in the water near Sluice Bridge.

The object was found at around 2.30pm yesterday by someone magnet fishing - using a magnet on a line to find metal in rivers and canals.

Network Rail were informed and Sluice Bridge has been closed.

Properties within 100m of the find were evacuated as a precaution.

This included Lister Way, Fydell Street, Irby Street, Castle Street, Tattershall Road, Union Place and Norfolk Street.

But the cordon was lifted and householders allowed home around three hours later when police determined it was a false alarm and not a grenade - although it is still unclear what the object is.
