Horse put down after being rescued from a Notts canal

The horse was spotted by a passer-by on Sunday, October 9 at Gringley Lock, near Gringley-on- the-Hill.

RSPCA inspector Becky Harper said: “We received a call about a bay mare who had been spotted in the canal.

“The caller then reported to us that the horse had managed to get herself out of the canal, and subsequently followed the lady back to the village, where she was secured on a farm. The poor horse had collapsed and was clearly suffering with exhaustion.”
Following a visit from the vet it was decided the kindest thing would be to put her to sleep as the horse was in the late stages of severe shock.

The horse was a bay mare with a white star on her head, and was thought to be around four-years-old. The village where she was found is small and nobody seems to recognise the her.

Now the RSPCA are appealing for anyone with information about the horse or how she came to be in the canal to come forward.
