Hospice donation

THE AMERICAN backer who part-financed the acquisition of Retford estate agency Drewery & Wheeldon flew 5,000 miles to present a £1,000 cheque from the company to Bassetlaw Hospice.

The hospice is the estate agent’s chosen charity for the year and are giving a donation for every sale completed at their Retford and Bawtry offices to the hospice.

Drewery & Wheeldon’s American backer J. Ward McConnell Jnr visited the company’s Retford office on Friday to present the cheque.

“It was a nice job to come here to do a good deed for the hospice,” he said.

“Giving back to the community has been important in my career. We believe every business should do some. We’ve built a swimming pool in the small city where we’re based and we did that in another place also.”

It costs £250,000 a year to run the hospice.

Bassetlaw Hospice Administrator Ian Hall said: “It’s fantastic when we get local businesses who are really keen on supporting the hospice because we can only fund-raise from Bassetlaw, and all the patients we support are from Bassetlaw, so that makes a real difference for us.”

“And it’s good really for the local community to see local businesses and organisations and everybody being involved, so we’re incredibly grateful. It’s superb really.”

“Every year it’s a task to raise the money we need, but every year the local community rises to it, and so we are really pleased to work with Drewery & Wheeldon again.”
