'I am just a small part of a much bigger workforce'

A MAN who has been ia leading light at Morton Village Hall for the past 25 years, has been awarded The Standard Rose.

Ron Cawte has been a familiar face at the hall over the past two-and-a-half decades and played a key role in bringing the community a brand new facility in July 2005.

Mr Cawte, 73, of Ropery Road, Gainsborough, was nominated for the accolade by friend and fellow Morton Indoor Bowls Club player, Dennis Lockwood and his wife Mary.

“I feel so privileged to have been given The Standard Rose,” said Mr Cawte, a grandfather of six.

“I enjoy all the things I am involved with surrounding Morton Village Hall and to know that the local community is grateful for all I have done over the years is very nice.”

The bowls club meets three evenings a week - Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays - and Mr Cawte is always the first to arrive and the last to leave.

“He puts so much work into all that he does for the village hall and the bowls club,” said Mr Lockwood, of Acland Street, Gainsborough.

“I think he is very deserving of this award and I am pleased to present him with it.”

Mr Cawte was the founder member of the Morton Indoor Bowls Club in October 1987. He has been chairman of the Morton Village Hall Committee for 20 years and has now taken a bit of a back seat but remains a member.

The former draughtsman for AMP Rose, has also been on Morton Parish Council for the past four years.

“I was heavily involved with bringing the village a new hall,” said Mr Cawte, originally from Hampshire.

“The old venue was old and too small and I helped apply for grants and funding for the new build.”

“But I couldn’t have done it without a team of small people from the hall’s committee and I am just a small part of a much bigger workforce. They should also be thanked for all their hard work over the years,” he added.

Morton Village Hall is open most nights and a variety of clubs and societies meet at the venue.
