Firefighters will be on strike on Thursday and over the next week, and people are asked not to make emergency calls unless they are really necessary during this time.

As part of their long-running dispute over pensions with the government, Fire Brigades Union members will stage strikes from 10am to 7pm on Thursday, then 6am to 8am, and 5pm to 7pm from Monday to Thursday next week. On Friday, July 18, they will strike from 6am to 8am and 11am to 1pm, and on July 19 and 20 from 11am to 1pm, and also from 7pm to 9pm on July 20. The last day of action will be July 21 from 6am to 8am and 5pm to 7pm.

Dene Sanders, chief fire officer at Humberside Fire and Rescue said: “While industrial action is taking place we will still respond to 999 calls. Our priority will be to respond to those calls where lives are at risk.”

Members of the FBU voted by 78 per cent for strike action in August last year.

They seek to avoid the implementation of proposals by the Government that they say would see firefighters ‘paying more, working longer and receiving less.’
