‘It’s a Blooming marvellous result’

The Gainsborough in Bloom volunteers, who have been working very hard towards this event, have been well rewarded.

The town took home the prizes for Most Improved Entrant, a bronze certificate and the Judges’ Award for Friends of the Old Hall.

Gainsborough received 41 more points than in 2010, which gave them the Most Improved Entrant award, and the award for the Old Hall recognised the work done on the period Elizabethan Garden.

Technical and contracts manager Neil Cucksey said: “I am extremely pleased that Gainsborough has won the awards at the East Midlands in Bloom competition.”

He continued: “The hard work, dedication and enthusiasm of the In Bloom committee, and the generous donations from several businesses around the town to try to make Gainsborough a pleasing environment is, I am sure, appreciated by all who live, work and visit the town.”

Owner of The Florist in Marshall’s Yard Joanne Biddle, a committee member of Gainsborough in Bloom, thinks that it is a fantastic achievement.

“What the team have created is amazing,” she said.

“We have received support, advice and guidance from both businesses and residents throughout our area.”

Joanne added: “Everyone in Gainsborough should be proud of what has been achieved so far, and the seeds have definitely been set for future growth.”

Joy Woods and Margaret Carter, both from Gainsborough, look after the Tudor garden at the Old Hall.

Mrs Carter said: “It is an honour to receive it, and hopefully there will be many more to come.”

Mrs Woods explained that they only grow plants from Tudor times in the herb garden and borders.

She said: “We are there every Wednesday afternoon, throughout the year.”

The Gainsborough in Bloom group is always looking for volunteers who can offer physical or financial support.
