Jason’s coastal lifeboat challenge

Jason is part of Watersafe UK search and rescue team, whose volunteers support the emergency services in a range of situations.

They are trained to respond to emergencies like water rescues, flood relief and adverse weather, natural disasters and searches for missing people.

The Round Britain 999 Coastal Challenge will see 10 brave team members attempt to circumnavigate th e 1,999 miles of Britich coastline in nine days, nine hours and nine minutes.

Jason, 30, now lives in belper, Derbyshire. But he is Worksop born and bred having been a pupil at St John’s Primary School and Valley School.

“I used to be an activity tutor at Sandhill Adventure Base - or Godfery’s Pond as Worksop folk know it,” said Jason.

“And I also worked as a paramedic team leader at Worksop Ambulance Station.”

“I noticed the Watersafe UK team web site in 2011 and believed my skills may benefit the team.”

Jason said the team was looking forward to the 999 challenge, which departs from Poole lifeboat station in Dorset on 9th September and ends there, hopefully, nine days later.

The boat will traverse the coast in a clockwise direction, stopping off at certain RNLI lifeboat stations along the route.

A recent sea trial from Wales to New Brighton has left the team feeling a little battered, bruised and apprehensive, said Jason. But they are still raring to go.

“The most difficult part of the challenge will be the duration and sea conditions,” he said.

“The flatter the water the faster we go. We will be encountering huge waves at times and this will result in reduced boat speed.”

“For most of the challenge legs we will be spending approximately nine to 12 hours at sea.”

Jason explained that at some points the boat would be sailing at a considerable distance from the shore, sometimes more than 50 miles out to sea.

He added: “We are looking forward to raising the funds to support the RNLI and Watersafe UK Search and Rescue Team, and also promote the work of both charities which are entirely voluntary and funded by public donations.”
