In a statement, Mr Hayat said: “This by-election presents an opportunity for the people of Sleaford & North Hykeham to make a statement. The constituency has been somehow written off this last decade as a Conservative safe seat - no vote should ever be taken for granted.

“The constituency needs a strong voice that will speak up in parliament on the issues that matter most.

“Whilst I have a proven track record of delivering, I recognise Councillor Marianne Overton MBE and her fellow Lincolnshire Independent Councillors mandate from the electorate who have entrusted in them repeatedly. From my analysis, if I were to peruse standing it would be counterproductive.

“Have no doubt about it this is a two horse race between Dr Caroline Johnson and Councillor Overton.

“However, my dedication to the area as always remains, and perhaps the 2017 local elections may present an opportunity for me to serve once again.”
