Just champion! QEGS Horncastle gets boost from NCS

QEGS is one of eleven schools across Lincolnshire - and 300 nationwide - to be named as a ‘champion school’ by the National Citizens Service scheme.

The Minister, Ms Justine Greening, said: “It’s really fantastic to see that so many pupils have already benefitted from the wide range of programmes provided by National Citizen Service (NCS).

“I want to congratulate all the ‘champion schools’ and thank them for their hard work and commitment helping young people across the country gain vital skills that will help them get on in life and fulfil their potential.”

Ms Greening is keen to see more schools ‘sign up’.

Champion status is given to schools who have excelled in promoting the NCS programme. It is open to 16-17 year olds who take part in a host of events and activities, including improvements to their local community.

Last year, NCS students in Horncastle helped renovate the town’s youth centre and raised the profile of the local food larder. Nearly three quarters of those who have taken part say they feel more confident about getting a job, and nine in ten say it has helped them develop useful skills for the future.

Michael Lynas, CEO of NCS Trust, said: “NCS is an investment in the future of young people. Everyone who takes part has the opportunity to develop new skills, meet new friends and gain the confidence they need to be successful in life and work.”
