Kirton's Gill knits 120 bears for annual shoe box appeal and other Neighbourhood News

In Kirton, Gill Goulder (pictured) has knitted 120 teddy bears to be included in the boxes.

The scheme gives people in the Boston area the chance to spread some festive joy to families in need in Eastern European countries.

People are being encouraged to collect a shoe box from St Botolph’s Church (The Stump) and fill it with gifts, before returning it to the church with £2 attached to help pay for transport costs by Saturday, November 10.

The club has set itself a target of 350 boxes for 2018, having collected 314 last year.

It is being supported by the Methodist churches, several primary academies, and the Stump itself.

Rotarians John Wright and Ivan Spencer have given illustrated talks to a number of schools.

“The children were intrigued to learn how poor families manage in Eastern Europe, particularly in little known Moldova and the war-torn Ukraine,” John said. “Filling their boxes will not only spread a little happiness but do the same for the givers.”

BOSTON

* REME Association

The Lincolnshire branch of the REME (Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers) Association holds a social evening with quiz on Tuesday, November 6.

Banter, a bar and a buffet can all be expected at the event, which takes place at the Drill Hall, in Main Ridge West, Boston, at 7pm for 7.30pm start.

NEW BOLINGBROKE

* History

The next meeting of the New Bolingbroke Local History Group will be held on Tuesday, November 13, at 7.30pm, in the town hall in New Bolingbroke.

The speaker will be Barry Wallis who will give a presentation about the International Bomber Command Centre.

This first class facility near Lincoln has been developed to serve as a point of recognition, remembrance, and reconciliation for those men, women and children who served, supported or suffered during the bombing campaigns during the Second World War.

Everyone is welcome.

Admission is priced at £1 for members and £2.50 for non-members, including tea, coffee and biscuits.

GOSBERTON

* Public Hall

The Gosberton Public Hall was decorated with pumpkins, spiders, bats, skeletons and other spooky objects for a Halloween quiz on Friday evening.

Several of the 40 or so who attended came in fancy dress, with Greg Ascough named the adult winner and Harley Perry and Harry Wright the joint children’s winners.

The question master was Sue Wayman and checker was Judith Gott, who also set the questions.

Rowland Perry made a wide variety of desserts for the event which were served by members and friends of the committee.

Two visitors, Peter and Fiona Bristow, were celebrating their wedding anniversary and Rowland marked the occasion by making and presenting then with an anniversary cake.

The winning team for the quiz was Skeleton Crew and the booby prize went to Apple Bobbers.

Sue thanked all who attended.

The door steward for the evenign was Rona Perry, who also sold raffle tickets.

The evening was organised by Rowland and Rona Perry, who along with Les Stevenson, were responsible for the decorations.

The next event at the Public Hall is a ‘40s Home Front event with Amanda and Steve on Friday, November 16, at 7.30pm

Tickets in advance are priced at £4.50 or £5 on the door.

* Tea party

Gosberton Methodist Church celebrates its 140th anniversary this year, starting on Saturday, November 3, with a Victorian tea event at 5pm.

This will be followed by a Victorian music hall celebration, presented by St Nicolas Players.

Victorian dress is optional.

The celebrations continue on the Sunday with morning worship at 10.30am, led by former minister, the Rev Jenny Park.

* Talk

Dragons and Dinosaurs is the title of a talk set to be presented at Gosberton Church Hall by Dr Martin Johnson on Friday, November 9, at 7.30pm.

Admission is free, but only by booking in advance.

Dr Johnson has undertaken a considerable amount of research into the argument that dinosaurs did not die out a vast length of time ago.

He has produced an illustrated presentation looking at scientific, historical, literary, and artistic clues that are challenging mainstream thought.

* Concert

The Gosberton branch of the Royal British Legion is organising a concert to mark the centenary of the Armistice for Saturday, November 17.

It will feature the Banovallum Band and take place at St Peter and St Paul’s Church, in Gosberton, at 7.30pm.

All proceeds will go towards the Poppy Appeal.

CLOUGH AND RISEGATE

All welcome to a quiz night in the St Gilbert and St Hugh’s church hall on Saturday, November 2, in aid of MAGPAS air ambulance and Friends of the Clough Church.

Up to six people in a team, bring your own picnic.

Mareham le Fen is holding its annual Autumn craft fair on Sunday, November 4, from 10am to 4pm at the community centre, in Horncastle Road.
