“We kept it from our parents for a short while,” Joseph, 81, said.

“We were knocking around for a couple of weeks before our parents sussed it.”

“The key to a long marriage is being able to work together.”

Joseph and Beryl, 80, said they used to hang out at the youth club and listen to music with friends.

“We both like gardening and we used to go to the pictures and down to the club,” Joseph said.

“We are always on the same level.”

“We are a couple of home birds really.”

“Our wedding day was frosty and foggy but we made the best of it, we had to.”

Joseph, who used to be in the army, told the Guardian that him and his wife both have diabetes now and can’t get out of the house as much anymore.

“We both looked after our own parents,” Joseph added.

“We looked after my mum and dad and Beryl’s parents when they were not very well.”

“But we have been ill ourselves for the last five years.”

“It is a shame we can’t go out but it just one of those things. We are still happy.”

The delivery of congratulatory messages marking 60th wedding anniversaries is arranged by the Anniversaries Office at Buckingham Palace.

For many people, receiving a congratulatory card from the Queen to mark a significant birthday or wedding anniversary is a very special part of their celebrations.

The Queen’s congratulatory messages consist of a card containing a personalised message and comes in a special envelope.

The couple celebrated their anniversary on Thursday in their home of 30 years.

Joseph added: “People are pleased for us. Beryl is looking forward to it.”

“I hope we have more years to come.”
