Ladies don’t sweat

UPSTAIRS Downstairs is my current Sunday night costume drama viewing.

It follows the inhabitants of 165 Eaton Place, London, in the run-up to the start of World War Two.

My favourite episode so far was when Lady Agnes joined the Women’s League of Health and Beauty’s exercise classes.

All the women wore identical satin blouses and shorts, much more flattering than the Lycra we squeeze into today.

They also had perfectly coiffed hair and seemed not to perspire at all. How refined.
