Langold Dyscarr pupils to make school return after huge blaze - and thank Outwood Academy Portland for ‘generosity’

Year Six pupils at Langold Dyscarr Community School, just off School Road, will return to their normal surroundings after using a classroom at Portland, on Netherton Road, for the last three weeks following the fire on Wednesday, November 11.

The school even organised for a bus to transport the children to and from Portland from Langold.

As many as 40 firefighters from across three counties battled the blaze, which is believed to have started in the kitchenette at about 4.45pm.

The fire caused serious damage to a corridor, two classrooms, a meeting room, three offices and a reception area.

“We would like to say thank you for their generosity for letting us use the classroom,” the kids said.

“When we first got here we were worried about getting around and getting lost but it has been really easy.

“It has been quite good, everybody has been good to us.

“They (Outwood pupils) have been letting us go first in the queue at lunch.

“We are looking forward to coming in September.”

An investigation found it was not suspicious, but tests to determine the exact cause are still being carried out.

Nine crews including Worksop, Harworth, Retford and Mansfield attended the scene as staff were evacuated.

Police cordoned off the school as fire chiefs used breathing apparatus, hose reel jets, thermal imaging cameras and ventilation fans.

At the time of the blaze, station manager and incident commander Simon Glew, said: “Crews did a great job in locating this fire and getting it quickly under control.

“Firefighters dealt with the incident swiftly and efficiently and, as a result, contained the fire to one part of the school and stopped it from spreading to other areas.

“That said, there is fire, heat and smoke damage to a number of classrooms in the front part of the school.

“About a third of the building has been damaged.”

Langold Dyscarr headteacher, Gemma Bradford, said: “Outwood have been extremely supportive at this difficult time for our school.

“We can’t thank them enough for all they have done for our Year Six pupils.”

Executive assistant at Outwood Academy Portland, Carol Gill, said: “We look forward to seeing them in September.”
