Learn life saving skills at Lincolnshire Show

St John Ambulance, the nation’s leading first aid charity, will be inviting visitors to Lincolnshire Show to learn life saving first aid skills on June 24 and 25.

The charity will be giving free first aid demonstrations in the Woldmarsh Discovery Zone area on the Wednesday and Thursday so that the public can learn how to save a life using easy to follow techniques including how to deal with someone who is choking, bleeding, someone who is unconscious, someone who has stopped breathing and someone who is having a heart attack.

The aim is to equip more people with vital first aid skills, as well as providing information about first aid training courses and volunteering opportunities in the region.

Carl Makins, Regional Training and Community Projects Manager for St John Ambulance, said: “We hope that many people will come to visit our marquee and have a go at learning vital first aid techniques. We know how important first aid is and, with basic first aid skills, anyone can be the difference between a life lost and a life saved.”

St John Ambulance will also be providing medical cover for the event. This year the dedicated volunteer team will include 18 first aiders who will running three first aid treatment centres and 8 ambulance crew who will be located with four of our emergency ambulances at key positions around the showground.

The St John Ambulance team is trained and ready to deal with the full range of medical conditions and injuries associated with large events and places where large crowds gather – from minor injuries to potentially fatal cardiac arrests. Anyone needing first aid during the show should seek help at one of St John Ambulance’s treatment centres.

The Lincolnshire Show continues to be a very popular family event that offers all ages a fun, educational and entertaining day out. The Show’s roots will always be in agriculture, but now shopping, delicious food, exciting stunt display teams and rides all have a place in the 200 acre Showground, and this is the first year that St John Ambulance has had the opportunity to offer free first aid demonstrations to visitors too.

The main attractions for 2015 include the amazing RAF Falcons and the Kangeroo Kid - a stuntman from Brisbane who will be rocking the Clydesdale Bank Main Ring with his quadbike antics. Plus there is the new Dog and Duck Show and the legendary Sheep Show in the Pentagon Group Countryside Area! For food lovers, local chefs will be hosting a number of cooking demos in the demonstration kitchen and a wealth of food stalls displaying Lincolnshire’s finest produce will be available to buy.For more information visit http://www.lincolnshireshow.co.uk/

St John Ambulance Events Manager Joe Shaw said: “With hundreds [BM1] of visitors expected the Lincolnshire Show looks set to be a major occasion and will be one of our biggest first aid events in Lincolnshire so far this year. On the day we’ll have the best possible team and facilities in place to provide the highest level of medical care across the showground. We’re very proud to have been chosen as the lead medical provider for this fantastic event.”

St John Ambulance volunteers will be giving up their free time to provide first aid cover for the event, relieving the strain on the local NHS. Because of its extensive first aid and medical provision throughout the showground, the charity’s team is able to treat and safely discharge many casualties who would otherwise have been taken to hospital.

St John Ambulance provides first aid cover to many major events in Lincolnshire and across the East Mildands, working closely with event organisers, local authorities and East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust.
