Life-saving donation gives club two goals

Wyberton Sports and Social Club was looking to raise money for the equipment when business Boston Sausage stepped in offering to raise the £1,000 needed.

The company organised a raffle with the prize being a year’s supply of meat, and matched the funding raised from that to achieve 
the goal.

Manager Scott Palmer said staff had seen an appeal for the defibrillator for the Wyberton Colts on Facebook.

He said: “Hopefully it will never be needed but if something happens there is now something there.”

He said the company often donated to charity.

He added: “When it’s something local, people are more forthcoming to donate things because they can see what we’re aiming for and can see the benefit at some point – although on this occasion we hope not!”

Club vice-chairman Lathan Miller had already been planning to take part in the Great Eastern Run to raise money for the defibrilator.

Instead, the money he raised was used for new goalposts for the pitch.

Mr Miller, who also coaches the Under 13s team and leads development for five year olds hoping to get into football, said: “We 
can’t thank Boston Sausage enough.

“The club can’t run without outside help and donations. It’s a massive thing to the club.

“At the end of the day, hopefully it [the defibrillator] will never get used but if it saves one life it will be worth it.”

The defibrillator has been paid for its lifespan and is set to last for eight or nine 
years.

“We always need something,” said Mr Miller.

The club is hoping to get more land to enable its 16 member teams to have more space – currently they have to share two pitches.
