Lights to stay on in Harworth

Notts County Council informed Harworth and Bircotes Town Council this month the plans to reduce street lighting have been dropped.

Proposed dimming on the A638, however, will happen and be carried out following the outcome of a dimming trial.

A county council spokesman said the decision to abandon part-night lighting was made after residents voiced their objections.

“A risk assessment is being carried out for each light in the county and in each area we are working closely with hospitals, emergency services and council road safety teams,” he said.

“As a result of feedback from the consultation in Harworth and Bircotes, it has been decided that streetlights in this area will remain unchanged.”

Harworth and Bircotes Town Council clerk said they were extremely grateful to the county council for listening to their concerns.

“The Town Council was concerned about the lights being switched off and a possible increase in crime as a direct result of this,” he said.

“The county council have been very supportive of Harworth and Bircotes Town Council and we are grateful for this.

Leader of the Labour opposition Coun Alan Rhodes said: “I welcome the fact that the county council have listened to Harworth and Bircotes Town Council on this occasion, but ask them to go further and withdraw this unpopular policy that is not in the best interests of our community,” he said.
