From 4-5.30pm, the specialist crews from Boston, Spalding and Skegness will take part in a ‘Ship Alongside Exercise’, simulating a fire on-board a vessel.

Mark Housam, marine response coordinator at Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue, said: “Exercises like this one are incredibly important in ensuring that our crews are ready to face a wide variety of operational scenarios.

“Each year our specialist crews are faced with a different ‘ship’ scenario. This can include changing the location, time of the day and creating new challenges to ensure that whatever the conditions, the team is ready and equipped to deal with whatever they are faced with.

“Just because our ports in Lincolnshire are small it doesn’t mean that the risk we face is any less and it’s vital that we’re prepared. We need to test out our operational plans, develop rescue strategies and try out new equipment, like SpiroCom, a new compact voice communication system built to handle the tough conditions firefighters face.”

The exercise will be contained within the Port of Boston to avoid any disruption to other areas of the town.
