Lincolnshire’s Freemasons pledge to raise £2.25m over five years

Lincolnshire’s 3,400 Freemasons have committed to raise £2.25m for charity during the next five years.

This, they will do through a series of fundraising events called The Festival, coupled with regular individual giving.

More than 160 Freemasons gathered at the Masonic Hall, in Grimsby, recently to launch The Festival and its #Lincs2025 hashtag.

Festival chairman Jez Hyland, from Horncastle, said: “There was a tremendous buzz in the room with so many people not only attending, but being positive about what we aim to achieve.”

The money raised will be channelled into the Freemasons’ charity the Masonic Charitable Foundation, which will make sure it gets to the point of need to improve the quality of life in the communities in which the Freemasons meet (which included Skegness, Spilsby, and Alford).

* Dance exercise

The Dance Fit group on Wednesday afternoons offers music and fitness at Burgh Baptist Community Church.

Dance yourself fit to a variety of music from 2-3pm, and step lively for line dancing from 3-4pm. Beginners’ tuition is available.

The Phoenix Group offers support and friendship for those facing loneliness from various circumstances, and prayer is available if desired. The group also has outings to different venues and guest speakers from time to time.

Meetings are held at Burgh Baptist Community Church on Wednesdays from 10.30am to 12pm.

The Knit and Natter group offers the chance to enhance your needlework or share your skills while meeting new people.

The group meets at Burgh Baptist Community Church on Thursdays from 2-4pm.

* Parish nursing

Burgh Baptist Community Church hosts a coffee morning and parish nurse session every Friday from 10am to 12pm.

Visit parish nurse Adele Pratt for health advice, a blood pressure check, and tips on weight management and wellbeing.

No appointment necessary.

The team is also available for support and prayer if desired.

Scones and hot drinks are available, along with a warm welcome.

Burgh Baptist Community Church now also hosts a parish nurse session on Tuesday from 2-4pm at Burgh Library and Community Hub. No appointments necessary.

SPILSBY

* Royal British Legion

Members of the Spilsby and District Branch of the Royal British Legion gathered at the Nelson Butt, Spilsby, recently for the branch’s first meeting of the year.

Vice chairman Mr W. Atkins opened the meeting, before the president recited the Act of Homage and welcomed members and guests.

Apologies were taken and the minutes were read and accepted, after which the various committees then gave their reports.

There are currently 61 members of the branch.

Mr R. Glynn Owen reported his attendance on behalf of the branch at The County Conference, in Horncastle, held earlier in the month. The legion is in consultation regarding respite care homes, the county vice chairman is now Mr J. Johnson, and the Wainfleet branch was awarded The County Cup.

Mr D. Clarke has taken over from Ann Lenton as social secretary. He will be arranging a coach trip in the near future and various other activities.

Mr R. Glynn Owen and president Mr R. Worth attended a meeting at the Town Hall earlier this month to discuss plans for VE Day 2020. Three councillors and the town clerk also attended, as well as other organisations.

Details of the event will be forthcoming from the Town Clerk in the near future.

Any other business was addressed by the vice chairman who raised the issue of the centenary of the war memorial, which is in 2021. This will be discussed at the next meeting, which will be held at the Nelson Butt on Wednesday, February 19, 7.30pm.

WALK

* Session

The Mark’s Tuesday Walking Group meets for its next session at the Market Place, in Wainfleet, on Tuesday, February 4, at 10am.

Walks last until 11am and are followed by tea and coffee.
