‘Litter bins are not a dumping ground,’ says district council

South Kesteven District Council fears the summer months will see an increase in rubbish left in bins by businesses and residents, leaving them full or with little space for passers-by or visitors to use them.

Businesses found using the area’s public litter bins could face prosecution for not sticking to their trade waste agreements.

Instead, they should use the household waste and recycling centre in Bourne or its bulk item collection service.

Ian Yates, executive manager for environment, said: “Filling public bins with private waste creates problems for members of the public wishing to dispose of their rubbish responsibly.

“Excess waste created by residents and businesses should not be placed in bins but disposed of in line with legal responsibilities.

“We want to work with individuals and businesses to find solutions, whether it is by additional bins or increasing the amount recycled.

“But any repeat offenders will be prosecuted.”
