Nicholas Whelan, 37, admitted his part in stealing a laptop and internet dongle at the Hope for the Homeless hostel, Queen Street, on 12th February.

He was staying at the hostel, as was another man who was caught on CCTV entering the victim’s room, while Whelan kept watch, Nottingham Crown Court heard.

The stolen items were at first hidden under bedding in another room before being found in a search of the hostel in Whelan’s wardrobe, said Jeremy Janes, prosecuting.

The victim had bought the laptop for £120 and had been hoping it would help him get back on his feet.

In mitigation for Whelan it was said the offence was opportunistic.
