Louth student duo reflect on '˜the time of their lives'

Katy Lowe from Tetney and Harry Vickers from Louth, both 19, were students at KEVIGS when local Rotary Club member Jim Judge spoke in their school assembly about the Georgia Rotary Student Programme (GRSP), and the pair both leapt at the opportunity to apply.

Amazingly, despite there being just 46 scholarship places available worldwide, both Katy and Harry were independently accepted onto the scheme– which aims to promote peace through better understand among nations.

The young scholars on the scheme are based in Rotary homes and attend universities all over the State, and they frequently meet together throughout the year.

Now, one year later, the pair have returned from the USA, and have hailed their unforgettable experiences.

Katy said: “Spending a year travelling around the state introduced me to a completely new way of life, including surviving the high heat and humidity, and experiencing the famous ‘Southern hospitality’ – something that has definitely not been exaggerated.

“I have made lifetime friendships with people from all around the world, built strong relationships with Rotarians, including my 
host families, and had an amazing year studying at the University of West Georgia.

“This is definitely an experience I will never forget. Thank you to everyone who made this possible.”

Harry said: “Over the past year I’ve absolutely had the time of my life.

“I made countless friends at university and especially the 45 other students on the scholarship, who we met on the many fun student weekends organised by the Rotary Clubs in Georgia.

“I learnt so much about different cultures and myself and had so much fun and 
have great memories.

“It was without doubt the best year of my life.

“Thank you to the Louth Rotary Club – without them it would not have been possible.”
