Lucky escape for two after light aircraft crashes at Netherthorpe

Reports say the plane ploughed through a hedge and flipped upside down before coming to rest on a road.

The pair were in a Cessna aeroplane which was attempting to become airborne at Netherthorpe airfield, near Thorpe Salvin, when it overshot the end of the grass runway.

Both occupants freed themselves and were treated by paramedics, but were fortunately unharmed.

A spokesman from South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said they were called to the scene at around 11am on the morning on Sunday 10th June.

“We did not have to cut free or rescue the occupants, and we were on stand-by due to the risk of fire from leaking fuel,” he said.

He added: “The plane was later removed from the road by a forklift truck and the incident has now been passed on to UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch.”

Netherthorpe airfield is owned and operated by Sheffield Aero Club.

A spokeswoman from the club said: “We are happy to say that both of the people that were in the plane are fine.”

She added: “Incidents like this are very rare and infrequent here at Netherthorpe.”

Sheffield Aero Club is probably the longest established flying training school and airfield in South Yorkshire and the only local club with their own airfield.
