Magnificent seven from Spilsby climb Snowdon to help others

David Bruce, of the New Life Centre, organised the climb for the Mavis Lawery Project - inspired by his godmother to help people in ways which the church is unable to.

“The New Life Centre does a tremendous amount of work in the community, but we cannot give people money,” explained Bruce. “As a result of the climb we have been unable to pay someone’s electricity bill and buy a homeless person underwear. For someone with nothing, even helping in small ways is really important.”

David was one of the team of friends, colleagues and service users who took part in the climb - including Sam Graham, Mark Ingram, Oliver Pidgley, Kita Johnson, and Anna Watson.

The team battled the freezing cold and 40-mph winds over five-and-a-half hours from start to finish, climbing 3,000 feet. It was like climbing Steep Hill in Lincoln for three hours - very tough,” said Bruce. “I’m extremely proud of everyone.”

Mavis Lawery worked for years in Kimberworth Park, Rotherham and surrounding area, focusing mainly on the youth and those who are often on the “fringe”. It was because of this amazing woman that Bruce set up the project. He said: “In our lifetime, we should all come across a ‘Mavis’ - someone who will never give up on us; someone who will always be there.”

It is hoped to turn this climb into a long-term project and the team are already looking at doing the National Three Peaks Challenge in just 24hrs to raise funds to help continue the work.
