Maltby: Hilltop School gets a new NHS-appointed occupational therapist

Maltby Hilltop is one of the two schools where occupational therapist Jo Helas has been appointed by the Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust to provide specialist sensory integration assessments and therapy to children and students aged three to 19.

Children who experience problems with sensory integration find it hard to process information that is obtained from sight, sound, smell, taste and touch, as well as past experiences.

This affects the way they react to where they are and what is around them, which means their bodies do not always respond in the most effective way and can lead to behavioural problems or affect learning and development.

Jo’s role will see her working with students to identify ways to overcome their difficulties, and put in place activities and programmes to help them respond more effectively, as well as providing training to teachers and families to help them provide ongoing support.

Jo said: “Children experiencing sensory integration difficulties can feel very isolated.”

“This role allows us to put the right treatments in place to meet a child’s individual needs.”
