Rotherham Magistrates’ Court heard how Richard Wilson, 21, of Carlyle Villas, went to the house where his ex-girlfriend was staying, demanding to see their child.

Prosecutor Mark Hughes said Wilson forced his way into the house, went upstairs and grabbed the child.

In a struggle, he hit Lorraine Edwards, the child’s grandmother, and picked up a table knife.

District Judge Jonathan Taaffe said: “This is an incident in the early hours of the morning where you apparently lost all self control. It is only by fortune that these matters did not result in serious injury or even fatal injuries given the fact I am told a knife was picked up.”

He told Wilson that all sentencing options, including custody, would remain open until a probation report was prepared. He was bailed until 9th July.
