Man jailed for two assaults

Tony Brunt, 35, of Langdon Walk, Kimberworth Park, Rotherham, already had five previous convictions for assaulting his partners and seven others for assaulting police officers.

Brunt was jailed at Sheffield Crown Court after he was seen grabbing his current partner by the neck in the street and dragging her back into a house.

The police were called and when they arrived they found Brunt in bed in the property.

He said he would co-operate with officers if they allowed him to roll up a cigarette.

Brunt was told to stop what he was doing, but refused and PCs Roger Casey and David Riley managed to secure a handcuff on his right wrist, before he became violent.

David Wain, prosecuting, told the court Brunt pulled both of the police officers towards him on the bed before kicking out at them.

The officers tried to restrain him by putting on the remaining handcuff. But they failed to secure him and Brunt fell off the bed and onto the floor.

During a brief pause in the struggle, PC Casey phoned for back-up and Brunt hit out at his leg.

The court heard that when he was taken to the police station for questioning, Brunt initially denied assaulting his partner.

But he later accepted the assault when officers showed him CCTV footage from the street.

Brunt admitted both the common assault on his partner and assaulting a police officer.

He was jailed for five months for the attack on his partner and a further four months for assaulting the police officer.

Brunt, who has a 12-year-old daughter, accepted his behaviour towards his partner was ‘entirely inappropriate’ and apologised during the hearing.

Jailing him, Judge Paul Watson said Brunt had ‘once again lost it’.

“You have what might charitably be described as a fearsome record for offences of violence predominantly in a domestic context and offences of assaulting police officers,” he added.
