Manton’s Perry is star mascot

Over 300 spectators cheered as Perry Gyekye, eight, of Radford Street stepped out as the team’s mascot with captain James Cotterill.

The club offered Perry the chance to be part of the match to congratulate him for his heroic efforts when mum Lorna Hughes suffered a massive attack last month, aged just 37.

Lorna said Perry was delighted to don his official Tigers kit and watch the players in action.

“He was a little star and always does me proud. He was really excited and said James Cotterill is now his favourite player,” she told the Guardian.

“He was enjoying himself because this is something he’s never done before.”

She said the opportunity has ignited a new passion in Perry.

“Perry is very keen on playing with footballs and doing tricks – we’ve lost count of how many he owns. If he had to choose between £5 or a new ball, he’d choose the ball every time,” she said.

“He isn’t usually as interested in watching football but after Saturday he was so excited. He even wanted to wear his orange jersey the next day.”

She added: “Thanks to Worksop Town Football Club for giving us this opportunity. We’ll definitely be going along again to support future games.”
