A total of 66 schools signed up the challenge on 21st November which asked them to switch off all non-essential electrical items, and use meter readings to compare their electricity use to a ‘normal’ day.

All together the schools saved almost a tonne of carbon dioxide which is enough to meet the energy use of an average house for 27 days.

Marton Primary School was highly commended for there involvement.

The school not only achieved a 50 per cent saving, but also demonstrated what is possible when all the school works together.

Between 8.30am and 3.30pm on Friday 21st, they used just 13 kWh across the whole school site and this was the lowest consumption of all schools enrolled on the challenge.

Headteacher, Ben Stephenson, said:“We tackled it the Marton way, the children were all fully involved and even brought wind up torches and water bottles so we didn’t need to use the water dispenser.”
