Meat processing facility gets the go-ahead in Alford area

Farmer Kitty Hamilton has been given the go-ahead to convert two agricultural buildings at Well, near Alford, for processing meat.

At an East Lindsey planning committee on May 12, approval was unanimous for her application at Grove Farm off Low Lane in the village.

Coun Tom Ashton said: “This is just the sort of diversification that any village worth its salt would be keen to encourage.”

The committee’s decision came in the face of objections from some villagers about the likelihood of increased noise not just from increased traffic but also from refrigeration both within the premises and from delivery lorries.

However, the proposal was recommended for approval by case officer Lindsey Stuart whose report maintained the proposal “would not result in a significant harmful impact upon the character of the area, the neighbour’s amenity, or traffic capacity or safety.”

The committee noted that the meat will come Grove Farm-reared stock which will be slaughtered at an abattoir near Boston.

Following its return to Well, the meat will be aged, butchered, processed and packaged as sausages, pies and bacon for sale chiefly at farmers’ markets.

The two buildings were previously used to accommodate a workshop and offices for an engineering business which has since relocated.
