Misterton families rally round to raise thousands

Headed by Joy Johnson, 56, of Hillsyde Avenue, who herself has been battling with the disease, there has been a coffee morning, concert and Christmas market all in aid of Cancer Reearch.

Joy, a mobile hairdresser, explained that the events were in memory of her sister in law Jayne Johnson, and friends Elaine Aston and Karen Hewitt, who had all lost their fight with various forms of cancer.

She said: “The coffee morning last year was a year since my sister in law had passed away, and a friend of hers had died the previous year. I thought I would just do something in their memories, and I’ve lost another friend too. I had breast cancer myself in 2008 and I have to be grateful because I’m still here.

“I’ve been given another six years up to now, you’ve got to get on and do as best you can.”

She added: “Cancer is in our family, I lost a cousin to it in 2006, her eldest sister got it. We are raising money for Cancer Research who deserve people to raise funds for them.”

Proceeds from the events – a total of £3,673 (£705 – coffee morning, £1,780 – concert, £1,033 – Christmas market, £155 – Dovecote Cafe) were handed this month.
