Pupils Kalisha Beck, Ellie Fox, Imogen Olivant, Nathan Price and Nick went down the Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge to raise funds for the Tanzania expedition they are doing next summer.
The mighty structure dominates the Teesside skyline and the team abseiled from its upper walkway.
Nick , MDTC World Challenge leader is incredibly proud of his team’s efforts. He said: “I grew up in Teesside so the bridge holds a special place for me. I suggested it to the team and they were up for it immediately. I showed them video clips of people abseiling from it and saw their faces change colour a little. Fair play to them though as they saw it through and each raised several hundred pounds towards their once in a lifetime adventure.”
Mr Barton added: “My colleagues, family and friends were keen to sponsor me as they know I am terrified of heights. Sure enough I was very anxious in the build-up but once up there it was amazing. The students and their families, who also travelled up to provide moral support, were brilliant.”
The team collectively managed to raise £1,000.
They also raised a further £350 from a bag pack at Co-op in Northgate and thank the customers and staff for their generosity.
