More than £7k from just a day

The sum was achieved in impressive fashion through a fun day held at The Five Bells pub, in Butterwick, in August.

In all, £7,305.50 was collected for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The idea for the event came from Hazel Holland, 50, from Butterwick.

Mother-of-two Hazel was diagnosed with cancer in early 2015 and underwent an operation as well as chemotherapy and radiotherapy as part of her treatment; shortly before Christmas, she was given the all clear.

She described the amount raised as ‘quite overwhelming’, with her expectations set about the £2,000 mark.

In the end, more than £5,000 was raised on the day with £2,000 coming from Barclays Bank through a match-funding scheme open to employees.

She said: “You can organise things and people don’t come, but it was quite a successful day. I was quite surprised when I was told we had raised more than £5,000.”

The day included no fewer than seven people having their head shaved as part of Macmillan Cancer Support’s Brave The Shave campaign.

They were: Paul and Liz Davies, Alan Bagley, Jerry Clifton, Jade Wallsgrove, all from Butterwick, Trish Squires, landlady of The Five Bells, and Damian Gibbs, of Boston.

Other activities on the day included a raffle, tombola, and auction.

Hazel, a member of kitchen staff at Butterwick Primary School, thanked all those who helped organise the event and made it such a success.

She said: “I couldn’t have done it without them. It was my idea, but you need the help and I got it and I was very grateful.”
