MP wants your views on new by-pass

Horncastle MP Victoria Atkins has urged residents and business owners to contact her with their views about a new town by-pass.

Her appeal comes after Ms Atkins raised the subject of Horncastle’s notorious traffic problems in a House of Commons debate last Thursday.

Ms Atkins said people were fed up with delays on the A153 and A158 and claimed the issue was hitting the local and regional economy.

Transport Minister John Hayes MP told Ms Atkins he was aware of the problem and wanted to meet with everyone concerned.

Ms Atkins said: “Every day this summer, my constituents, tourists and I had to wait up to 45 minutes to pass through the traffic lights at the Bull Ring where the very busy A153 crosses the even busier A158.

“The single carriageway road cannot cope with the volume of traffic between the city of Lincoln and the east coast.”

Mr Hayes then offered the prospect of a meeting and praised Ms Atkins for raising the issue.

Ms Atkins added: “I am pleased to hear that the Minister listened to my concerns. What I want to do is let the Minister know local people’s views on how to resolve these traffic jams.

“I invite residents and businesses affected by these traffic jams to write to me with their views.”

The development comes as Lincolnshire County Council and East Lindsey District Council both say they support the idea of a by-pass.

However, the two authorities appear to be miles apart in any kind of formal agreement, with ELDC claiming the county council wants to see 2,000 new homes built in the town to help finance the new road.
